Message from our Chair

Hello everyone!

Welcome to Film Unit’s Autumn selection – now in our SIXIETH year of being Sheffield University’s student cinema, we’re happy to boast the title of Best Working Committee 2009. As always, we’ve got a great line up for you to enjoy this term. If you are new to the union all you need to know about Film Unit is that we cater for all tastes, whether you are dying to see the latest 2009 releases (missed Bruno or Harry Potter 6 ?), considering a night in front of the big screen with friends and an old favourite (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Wayne’s World) or just want to try something a little different midweek (The Class, Broken Embraces). These are screening opportunities Not To Be Missed: tickets are available at just £1.80-£2.00 from the union box office! This year we are also especially interested in your society, your department, your interests: contact us if you are interested in sponsoring or even showcasing a particular film at the auditorium for charity or a society event.

Lastly, look out for our new and innovative ways of getting Film Unit’s name around the union and residences – we want you to feel that the student cinema is a great alternative to any night out in Sheffield. Happy watching!

Katy Mack (Chair) and all of us at Film Unit x

What is Film Unit?

Film Unit is a professional quality independent cinema located deep within the University of Sheffield Union of Students and run entirely by volunteers.

What do you do?

We show films: over 100 a year, in fact. On Wednesdays we have foreign and arthouse films, to make you feel cultured in a studenty way. Friday and Saturday flicks are typically recent mainstream hits, and on Sundays we show old favourites, so you can chill out in preparation for the week ahead. Scroll through the films on the right to see our line-up this semester.

How can I see these films?

Buy a ticket! They're available for £1.80/£2 (at the weekend) from the Union Box Office. Tickets go on sale a week in advance, and although you can buy tickets on the night, we advise you to buy them a little earlier to avoid having to queue or being late. Alternatively, if you get involved you can see films for free!

Who can come and see films?

Anyone! If you've got a valid U-Card or NUS card, Box Office will happily sell you tickets. If you're not a student or member of the university, don't fret! You just have to buy tickets from the Box Office in advance, so that you can use the valid Film Unit ticket to get into the Union at night.

I have young children. Can they come too?

As long as the film is suitable, yes. Look at the BBFC rating of the film for guidance. You should also be aware that films may be preceeded by adverts or trailers of a higher certificate than of the feature presentation. Look in one of our programmes for showings that are Child Friendly (CF) - these won’t have adverts and will only have trailers suitable to the certificate. Alternatively, you can just ask the House Manager on the night to tell you when it'll be safe to come in. Please note that anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Proof of age may be required when attending films with a 15 or 18 certificate.
