Get involved > Ushering

You don’t need any previous experience to usher with us.
Ushering is a relaxed role that only really requires a welcoming attitude.

1. Sign up

To sign up as an usher, you can send an email to one of our Chief House Managers at or join our Film Unit House Staff Facebook page, where we post the weeks screenings every Monday and volunteers can comment the films they would like to work.

2. Arrive 30 minutes before the screening

Our ushers take and tear the audience’s tickets at the beginning of a screening, standing by the doors to welcome them. Then at the end, when the credits start rolling they hold the doors open for everyone to leave.

All training is given on the day, so arrive 30 minutes before the film is scheduled to start, for matinees and for evenings.

3. Your role

A House Manager will meet you in our auditorium before the screening and brief you about your role and provide information about our ticket policy, conduct rules and anything else you need to know.

In exchange for your help, you can stay and watch the films you volunteer at for free. This is perfect if you would like to see a couple of free films and don’t have much time to give up.

Ushering is a great way to see if you’d like to become more involved with Film Unit, many people start out as ushers before considering a more demanding role so they can get a taste of how our screenings run.
